The Fleece at Cirencester | Review

Matt and I have a tradition for our anniversary that we’ve managed to maintain for 6 years out of 7 (last year we were saving for a house). Rather that buy each other presents for our anniversary we take a mini break to somewhere where we can enjoy quality time together. Between work, my blogging and his rugby sometime time quality together is limited even though we live under one roof! So this year we decided to head south to the Cotswolds and make the most of my work benefits and head to one of the inns the company I work for own.

We arrived at Cirencester on the Friday afternoon and we’re promptly checked in at The Fleece at Cirencester by a very friendly member of staff who showed us to our beautiful room. I was hugely impressed with the room which had it’s own separate dressing room, huge four poster bed and was filled with cute little details such as fresh milk and the cute little tea cosy! After checking in and dumping our bags we decided to explore Cirencester a little and took a stroll. To say I love this little town is an understatement. I’m such a sucker for historic buildings and beautiful architecture and Cirencester has plenty!

After an afternoon of strolling around we headed back to the inn to book in for dinner and enjoy a few drinks. The bar was very busy with a full range of people and ages and there was even a few dogs curled up in corners – which is always cute. There was a relaxed atmosphere of people enjoying a drink to start their weekends, or like us – enjoy a pre dinner drinks.

After a few glasses of wine we took our seat in the cosy lounge at the rear of the inn. Our table was next to the open fire which was lovely.

Being quite familiar with the menu (seems I spend my time looking after their website and social media) I already had my eye on the huge chicken burger, but still took pleasure in picking out my starter. For starters we had the Pigs in Blankets with Honey Mustard Mayonnaise and the Tiger Prawn Tempura with Spicy Chilli Dipping Sauce. My prawns were amazing!

For mains I enjoyed the Chicken Burger with Avocado, Chipotle Mayonnaise, Pickled Chillies, Onion Rings, Salsa and Fries and Matt chose the 28 Day Aged Fillet Steak with Peppercorn Sauce and Chips and we shared sides of Zucchini Fritters and Onion Rings. My burger was succulent and filled with flavours and Matt’s steak was perfect – juicy, tender and cooked to perfection.

After our huge feast you would think we’d have no room for dessert – however we managed to squeeze a few in! The Warm Chocolate and Hazelnut Brownie and the Vanilla Creme Brulee with Shortbread were calling our names!

Following dinner we headed back to the bustling bar to enjoy a few more drinks before bed.

After a peaceful night’s sleep in our gigantic bed we went back to the bar for breakfast. It was cute to see that all the tables had chequered table cloths on and the bar top was piled high with cereals, pastries, bread and fresh juice. We took a table and both ordered a full breakfast to be cooked as we like it – scrambled eggs and extra crispy bacon! There were a few people enjoying breakfast in the relaxed atmosphere and we sat reading the paper and watching the world go by.

We went back upstairs to collect our bags and (sadly) check out. I was very impressed with my first leisure stay at The Fleece at Cirencester and look forward to coming back down more often to enjoy the cosy, relaxed atmosphere and incredible food!

What do you do to celebrate your anniversary? Have you ever visited The Fleece? Where have you visited recently that is worth telling others about?
